AGUAS LINDAS DECLARATION

31 January 2001

With this communication, we, the residents and peasants of Bolívar South, grouped in the Magdalena Medio Regional Roundtable for Peace, wish to declare the following:

We are extremely satisfied with the meeting in Aguas Lindas that took place yesterday, 30 January, in which 1,000 peasants and residents representing the settlements of El Diamante, Vallecito, La Virgencita, Paraíso, Las Humaderas, El Jardín, La Unión, Cañabraval, Las Pavas, Carolina, Monterrey, Patio Bonito, San Pablo and Aguas Lindas responded to the call by their leaders.

We remembered the full process of our struggle since 1985, including the agreements of 1998 and through to the present day, before analysing the current situation.

In this document we wish to emphasise the presence of our children, whose cries made clear the feeling of the region.

We want a better future for our children.

As such, we agree to the Meeting Zone and:

Reaffirm our full support for the Meeting Zone, the National Convention and the dialogue process initiated between the government and ELN.

As part of this process, we demand that the agreements we, the residents and peasants, signed with the support of all Colombian society on 4 October 1998 with President Andrés Pastrana in representation of the state are honoured.

We also want peace with social justice and will direct all our efforts for this purpose.

Signed:

Gabriel Henao

Fito Muñoz

Carlos Mejía

Marcos Tulio Jiménez.
